Slow Laptop

Ask Claude why your laptop is so slow

One message to paste in, a plain list back, and nothing changed until you say yes.

Paste this into the Code tab
My laptop keeps running really slowly and freezing. Can you help me figure out why this keeps happening? Have a look at what's filling up the storage, what's running in the background, and anything else that could be slowing it down. Don't close, delete or change anything until I've said yes to that exact thing. Give me a plain list of what you found and what you'd suggest, in plain English, and we'll go through it together.
  1. 01Open the Code tabDownload the Claude desktop app and sign in. At the top there is a tab called Code. It looks just like a chat, but it runs on your own computer, which is why it can see what is slowing it down and the normal chat cannot.
  2. 02Paste the messagePaste the message at the top in and send it. Claude asks before it runs anything, and each time it says what it wants to look at, so you say yes to the looking.
  3. 03Go through it togetherIt comes back with a plain list, the storage, what runs in the background and when you last restarted. Paste the second message and decide one thing at a time what stays and what goes.
Then this, to go through the list
Let's go through your list one thing at a time. For each one, tell me what it is, what happens if I remove it or switch it off, and whether you'd keep it. Then wait for my yes or no before you touch it.

What Comes Back

When I ran it on the Mac I work on, it found the storage 92 percent full, much of it leftover copies of Chrome that had never been cleaned up because Chrome had not been closed, the memory full because my work apps had been open for weeks, and no restart in 24 days. It changed nothing, and ended by asking which fix I wanted and offering to show me exactly what each would touch first. Yours will be its own list, and you decide each line.

Why The Code Tab

The normal Claude chat runs on Anthropic's computers, so it can only guess at yours. The Code tab, on a local session, runs on your machine with access to it, and it asks before it runs a command or edits a file, which is why the message tells it to look and change nothing until you say yes.

Source, Anthropic's desktop app docs, on local sessions, asking first, and the Mac and Windows downloads.

One Honest Bit

The Code tab needs a paid Claude plan (Anthropic's pricing), and it works on Mac and Windows. It can clear out what is clogging a laptop, but it cannot fix one that is simply old or short of memory for what you ask of it, and when that is the answer it will say so, which is worth knowing before you buy a new one.

Want to get better at this?

Let's set up your agent ecosystem.

This page is one job. The whole thing is a set of them running off the same foundation, the folder your AI works out of, the brief on how you like things done, the accounts it can reach and the skills that run off all of it, so your admin gets done the way you would do it. It is what I teach one to one, on your own machine and against your own work, and the quickest way to find out what yours would look like is a proper chat about it.
